To lead Russia, it was necessary to start developing the digital ruble back in 2016
Widespread digitization is unlikely to be feasible in the medium term without intermediaries

Russia is unlikely to succeed in becoming a leader in the global race to digitalize the economy, says the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for digital development
Russia was several years late for the race to digitize the economy. At least, Dmitry Peskov, the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for digital and technological development, thinks so.
Russia: Peskov describes ‘unprecedented rudeness’ of British on Skripal case
According to him, in order to lead Russia, it was necessary to follow the path of digitalization back in 2016..
However, the risk, from a financial point of view, does not justify the potential benefit, notes Peskov. In his opinion, the “quick second” strategy is much more effective than the intention to become the first.
“Let’s see what the leader will get, what barriers he will run into. We will not bang our heads against its wall and will try to get around, as it happened with us, for example, with non-cash payments, ”said Peskov.
Mediators in business
The special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for digital and technological development believes that the central bank of the country has already “calmly built the appropriate infrastructures.” Peskov is sure that “at some point” Russia has bypassed many countries in a turn:
“This, as they say now, is a ‘Russian card miracle’. I think our Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance are definitely capable of another such miracle “.
At the same time, Peskov admits that widespread digitization is hardly feasible in the medium term without intermediaries. As such an intermediary layer, the special representative of the president points to the branches of Sberbank and Russian Post.
However, not everyone sees the “Russian card miracle”. Recall that the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation previously proposed to punish with a criminal article with imprisonment up to three years for hiding cryptocurrency income.
President of the Russian Association of Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain (RACIB) Yuri Pripachkin said that the regulation of the domestic market should be aimed at helping in the development of the industry, and not “deprive the state budget of new tax revenues”.
It should be noted that this is not the first prohibitive initiative of domestic regulators. Earlier, the executive director of RACIB, Alexander Brazhnikov, noted that the new proposals of the Ministry of Finance for mining cryptocurrencies would throw the technological development of Russia to the level of Afghanistan.
Earlier, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin called for the creation of a digital platform from the country in the “good sense of the word.” How the digital ruble can be useful, find out in a special editorial material.
